Sustainability of construction of appartment houses in the city Vienna

The Austrian capital in many respects can become inspiring, including appartment housing policy. We will go briefly through its history and through the current status, that could for its qualities inspire number of European cities, including those in the Czech Republic. Attention will be given to the question of subsidised housing construction. This is described in detailed breakdown analysis of the system and of the criterias applied for public grants′ allocation. This concerns new construction developments and remediation of existing buildings with special emphasis on the environmental aspects.

The paper comments on recent changes of building-energy requirements. It is not clear whether these changes should be understood as stable for a longer period of time and if the general ideas of European directive are fulfilled. It is out of discussion that official assessments should support solutions which are naturally correct - both as individual and societal requirements – together with high-quality indoor environment. Further, the paper discusses the use of renewable energy systems in buildings and their consideration into energy calculation. Final part of the paper comments on development of buildings with really low energy demand, emphasizing overall solutions with better integration of building and its energy system.
